Why a website ?

Because everyone has one ? Because the competitor has one ? Because it looks nice on your business card or on the company cars ? These are a few reasons not to do it for. You need better reasons to have a website.
Main goal : to make profit !
Okay, but we are a social organisation, a hospital, a Medical Pedagogical Institution, a rescue home, a peace movement, a non-profit organisation, a school. We don’t make profit. Not in the narrow commercial sense of the word. But these organisations also live through profits of their users, clients, students, sponsors, government, customers. So all of them are also target groups who contribute to the wellbeing of your non-profit organisation or your institution.

Of course, we don’t have to emphasise the commercial meaning of making profit. This can be pure money profit, but also a higher turnover, better reputation, more product popularity, more customers.

And what do you think about lower costs by an administrative simplification :

  • ask your agents to check online daily their information and return
  • treat your offers through your website
  • have customers calculate themselves their offer online
  • provide online registration for the participants of your event
  • ...

Consequence : less paperwork, lower telephone bills, less typing, fewer follow-up, correct information, less hours to work, ... do we need to continue ?

In this way, you earn back the cost price of your website in no time.

Which public is your target ?

Is your website made for the consumers (B2C), or rather to trade partners (B2B). Or do you want to reach various target groups : consumers, customers, suppliers, potential clients, visitors of your shop, residents of your institution, students, parents of the pupils. There is an enormous difference whether your target group only consists of consumers, or if they are for instance people wanting to gather knowledge, or looking for new ideas.
Do keep in mind the age of your target group. If you are a travel agency, organising bus excursions for retired people, make sure your website is well legible, with enough contrast, and large characters.
If you direct yourself to children, you can have it in a more playful way.

If you direct yourself to teenagers, you can have it more flashy and gamesome.

How do you choose a good domain name for your company ?

10 golden tips!

  1. Choose a domain name as brief as possible : www.superclean.be is much better than www.superclean-smith-london-and-some-more-of-this.be
  2. Choose as domain name the name of your company or your product, if still available of course. If indeed the name of your company is “Superclean”, choose as domain name www.superclean.be and/or www.superclean.com. If this name is no longer available (which is, unfortunately, the case for superclean, what a pity), be creative and invent another, often much better name. Instead of www.superclean.be you can easily imagine following :
    • www.supercleaner.be (available ! at 10/6/05)
    • www.superclean-online.be (available ! at 10/6/05)
    • www.superclean-brussel.be (available ! at 10/6/05)
    • www.superclean-pieters.be enz (available ! at 10/6/05)
  3. Choose the right extension in function of your target public. Extensions are the additions after your domain name : be, com, net, org, nl etc. If you focus only on the local market, then it is good to choose .be. Visitors will select easily on their search machine the “Websites for Belgium”. In this way, no foreign extensions are shown (nl, fr, …) and the .be websites rank first. Is your horizon larger, choose for a .com. Still hesitating ? register with .be as well as with .com, and have a link on both to each other. An additional registration doesn’t cost that much.
  4. Be careful with hyphens, unless, of course, you have no other choice. If your company name is “the foaming sponge” (instead of superclean), then you can register for both www.the-foaming-sponge.be and www.thefoamingsponge.be. Registration for both domain names offers you 2 important benefits :
    1. The name without hyphens will be entered more easily by the visitor in the navigation bar (and be found), than the one with hyphens
    2. On the other hand, the name with hyphens is better for search machines. The words separated with a hyphen are recognized as words on their own. A descriptive domain name like www.superclean-industry.be has the advantage to be found on superclean as well as on industry.
  5. Choose a solid name, a name that will last for a while. Are you specialised in washing cars, and you have plans to enlarge this in future with trucks, office windows and industrial installations, then a name like www.superclean.com is clearly a name longer lasting than www.carclean.com.
  6. Beware for names of big existing companies. If your family name happens to be “Ford”, then www.ford-superclean.com is probably not a good idea.
  7. Don’t forget to renew your domain name after the initial registration period. Just imagine your biggest competitor becomes all of a sudden Superclean.
  8. Use strong words in your domain name, such as super, for free, new, and avoid empty words like tidy, common, dirty, etc. Superclean is in a way a very good name but… unfortunately no longer available.
  9. Register today, if you wait until tomorrow your name can be taken by someone else. Even if you haven’t yet your website, the name will be yours anyway.
  10. Apply above instructions.

Make some investigations

In preparation you should spend some hours on the Internet, spread over several days. Use the Google search engine to find information, sites, competitors by means of search terms to have your own site found for later on.
A few words of explanation.
Just imagine you are a visitor wanting to find your own future website. What would you ask through Google. Do so, note down these words and hand them over to us, because these are the golden keywords whenever we proceed to optimisation.
Meantime, you get inspired, you learn what your competitors have on the Internet, and slowly you get the idea : I can do better. In other words, look for weaknesses whilst searching, and make these weaknesses your strength.
If you are www.supercleaner.be and you hardly find any information when you look up keywords like “wash windows”, “washing cars”, then you should write down these headwords to use them later for optimisation. These words will return you money !

Inspiration is also very important : ideas as for colours, photos, animations, are very welcome for us as your developer.
